At Obridge Academy, we are constantly thinking of ways to improve instruction and resultant student learning. A significant part of improving learning and the overall educational experience is the Learning Management System (LMS). An LMS is the system that allows online learning to take place. Until now, Obridge students have been using the iStudy, or the eLearning LMS. Beginning at the end of this school year we will be using Blackboard as our LMS.

Blackboard is recognized throughout the educational world as the best LMS; it is used all over the world in colleges, learning centers and schools, both for dedicated online programs and for blended programs.

Here are a few of Blackboard’s advantages:
• Enhanced student interactivity
• Expanded writing opportunities
• Improved content presentation
• Increased course offerings
• Better teacher-student connectivity.

Blackboard has a built-in portfolio feature, where students will be able to store their work as they progress toward graduation. In addition to these improvements, Obridge students will also be able to take courses for college credit through St. Joseph’s College. St. Joseph’s was founded in 1916 and has campuses in New York City and on Long Island, near the Great South Bay, an inlet of the Atlantic Ocean.

We are also going to begin publication of a student newspaper. You will be invited to take part in the paper as the summer progresses.

We are initiating a Parent Teacher Association (PTA) and will be inviting participation and asking for ideas. You are always welcome to submit your ideas.

Together with a great teaching and support staff, I look forward to a new academic year.
